Pilates was created by the late Joseph Pilates, whose exercise method began its popularity among dancers in the 1920’s. He continued to train clients in his New York studio until his death in 1967 at age 87. Hollywood celebrities discovered Pilates exercise in the 1970’s through a former student who had opened his own studio in Beverly Hills. The media followed extensively, allowing the public to take notice. Over 10 million Americans now practice Pilates, and the numbers continue to grow.
Pilates exercise continues its popularity in the fitness mainstream because of its focus on allowing the mind to control the muscles. It also focuses on core postural muscles that help keep the body balanced and the spine supported. Pilates exercises, in particular, teach awareness of breath and alignment of the spine, and strengthen the deep torso and abdominal muscles.
